Bond No. 9 Andy Warhol Union Square
April 30, 2008, 7:22 pm

Andy Warhol loved New York. In fact, he spent many years creating some of his best work in the Union Square area. What’s that got to do with perfume? Everything, darling. Warhol also loved perfume and considered it a way to “see and be seen.” The new Union Square scent baring his name truly captures the hustle and bustle of Union Square, the vast array of characters, and the culture, of course.

Described as a fresh green floral that’s “simultaneously cool and warm”, Andy Warhol Union Square includes:

Top Notes

Lily of the Valley, Green Stem

Heart Notes

Sweet Blue Freesia, White Birchwood, Amber

Basenote

Silver Cloud Musk Accord

The artwork on the bottle is from a portfolio of flower screenprints Warhol made in 1970 at the first of his two studios in Union Square.

Prices: 1.7 oz ($135), 3.4 oz ($195)

CRYSTAL:With this combination of scents, its hard to distinguish one in particular, which is a good thing. The result is refreshing, complex, and sophisticated all at once. The musk suggests a certain level of maturity, and on its own, would be much too geriatric. But when combined with the freshness of the green stem notes and lily of the valley, it really shines. I felt a bit like an uptown Manhattan native in this – rich, sophisticated and cultured. If I were five years older (and rich of course), this would likely be my signature spring scent. I’ll keep this on hand when I want to smell special, but for my daily routine, I’ll stick to a more youthful, playful scent, like L’eauParKenzo.

NOTE: At first spray, the smell is vivid and lively, but quickly dulls down. I’d definitely recommend layering the perfume with a matching lotion to make the scent last.

STEPH: When I first applied this perfume in the office several people complained that it was an overpowering scent. I noticed some very strong flowery notes when I first put it on, but once the perfume has a chance to sink into my skin, there was a musky tone which I really liked – it made the fragrance feel grown-up and sexy. Andy Warhol Union Square is described as a mixture of “sweet and cool” which accurately captures the different layers of the fragrance. I really like the fusion of tones in the scent, because it also smells really fresh. It is a great perfume for spring and one that I would recommend. Just remember to let it linger for a while before you head out the door!

Oscar Blandi’s Smoothing Hair Treatment
April 30, 2008, 7:20 pm

I went to visit the boyfriend last weekend, and packed an extra beauty treat to try – Oscar Blandi’s Trattamento Di Jasmine Smoothing Hair Treatment. I’ve been trying to get my hair back in shape ever since I went ultra blonde last fall, and this bad boy promised to “repair and provide intense moisturization.” The verdict? Nothing short of spectacular.  From the moment I saw and felt the thick, creamy texture, I knew I was in for a treat.  But this hair treatment surprised me! My hair felt so soft and pampered from this product.  In fact, it completely changed the texture of my hair! I kept rinsing and rinsing, thinking there was still product in my hair, but it was actually just my own luscious locks! When I blow dried my hair, gone were the frizzies and noticeable split ends.  All that remained was gorgeous, soft, repaired hair.  Obviously, this won’t replace trims, but it will replace that terrible treatment you buy at your local drugstore (you know, the glorified conditioner?).

Where to find it: Sephora for $26.

Joico K-Pak Reconstruct Leave-in Protectant
April 30, 2008, 7:20 pm

Joico K-Pak Reconstruct Leave-In Protectant is a fancy new product which is made by real hairstylist’s – yes ladies, that’s why you can’t find it at your regular drugstore! I decided to check it out as I am constantly drying my hair out with highlights and straightening irons. The formula is sold on the fact that it seals the hair’s cuticle and therefore provides ultimate protection – and it contains so many active ingredients that I can’t possibly include them all here! It should be applied to damp hair, combed through and then left on. I found it best to apply it right after the shower. The product is very foam-like in its consistency, but i found it easy enough to distribute through the hair. The problem with foamy formulas is that they tend to be sticky and gunky, so I was a little worried about it weighing down my hair. I am not a big user of leave-in conditioners or protecting sprays as I find they all tend to be quite heavy, and unfortunately Joico’s product is no exception. I also didn’t think it was any better than my regular rinse-out conditioner ( I am currently using VO5 Vitaburst ). It costs around $11-13 bucks for a 250 ml bottle which is not bad – but I’m not converted yet.

Where to find it: Select hair salons or www.banler.com.

Free massage or “catch” of the day?
April 28, 2008, 3:31 pm
Filed under: NYC Beauty Guide | Tags: ,

If you live in New York City, you’ve probably been offered a flyer from an unenthused, yet loud gentleman for a free half hour massage.  Usually, I pass by without taking the aforementioned flyer, as I assume there must be a catch.  This time, I thought I’d do a little investigative work (ahem…make a call) to find out what this “free” massage entails.

First of all, the free massage is not a spa massage, its a medical massage, meaning you must have a particular pain that you’d like for them to work on.  The other catch? You must have health insurance they accept.  This doesn’t mean you’ll be charged anything; it simply means they only want to give you a free massage if there’s a possibility you’ll become a client (understandable, yet annoying).

So there’s the scoop.  You can get a free massage, but it won’t be the luxury treatment you’re hoping for.  On the other hand, if you’ve got serious back pain, it might be worth a shot.  Ultimately, I decided not to go in for a massage.  Even though I do have some back pain, I’m not interested in visiting a doctor’s office of any kind if I don’t have to.

xoxo,
Crystal

Convo with a Bobbi Brown Makeup Artist
April 24, 2008, 7:46 pm
Filed under: Everyday Beauty | Tags: ,

I’ve been a fan of Bobbi’s for a while now, but I haven’t actually tried any of her products (I know, shame shame!). So I decided to ask Carol, a Bobbi Brown makeup artist, which products would work for me.

Q: I have oily, acne-prone skin and can usually only use mineral foundation. I’d like to find a foundation that will combat shine and oily skin without breaking me out. Any suggestions?

A: I recommend you try Bobbi Brown’s OIL-FREE EVEN FINISH SPF 15 FOUNDATION. This foundation is specially formulated with oil-absorbers that will keep your skin shine-free and fresh-looking all day. The Oil-Free Even Finish SPF 15 Foundation is perfect for a combination to oily skin type and will give you medium coverage. Plus, there’s UVA and UVB sun protection SPF 15 to guard against damage from the sun and the environment.

Apply to cleansed and moisturized skin. For the most natural look, apply only where needed to even skin tone and cover flaws using the FOUNDATION BRUSH or the MAKEUP WEDGE. For more complete coverage and a more polished look, Crystal, apply foundation to forehead, chin, cheeks and nose (working one area of the face at a time), and blend with the Foundation Brush. Set your foundation with powder for longer wear. Bobbi’s SHEER FINISH LOOSE POWDER is an oil-free formula that will give you super – sheer, long – lasting finish. Apply over your foundation with the POWDER BRUSH for the most natural look. For more coverage, use the POWDER PUFF in a gentle pressing motion then dust off the excess with the Powder Brush. Try PALE YELLOW for your fair skin tone.

Q: I’m new to blush and have been having some problems applying it. I’m very pale and am unsure if I should blush the apples of my cheeks or my cheekbones instead. (I’d like to look vibrant and youthful). I’m also not sure what shade I should be using.

A: When applying cheek color, think of mimicking the look of a natural “flush”. Put the color where it naturally occurs, at the apples of your cheeks (this is the fullest part when you smile). Using Bobbi BLUSH BRUSH, apply Blush at the apples, and blend backwards toward your hairline in feathery strokes. Then blend downward to soften the edges. One of Bobbi’s favorite techniques is to apply a soft, neutral shade first, from the apples of the cheek back to the hairline; then a second, brighter shade is applied only to the apples for a “pop” of healthy, fresh color. For your coloring, I recommend trying the SAND PINK (a medium sandy pink) and PALE PINK (a bright pale pink) shades of Blush.

Q: What new products are you really excited about? And what one beauty item could you not live without?

A: I am truly excited about the NEW QUICK FACE COLLECTION. The Quick Face Collection offers products designed to help women get out the door in a hurry!

I could not live without Bobbi’s CORRECTOR, CONCEALER, FOUNDATION, and POWDER. Bobbi’s foundations, concealers, and powders are yellow-based, providing the most natural look for the skin. Bobbi believes that most women have some degree of yellow in their skin, so her makeup shades are skintone-correct. Also, the yellow tone is ideal for neutralizing any redness in the skin.
